IVR-Based Weather Advisory Service for Mung Bean Farmers

M-World, with funding support from CIMMYT, launched an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) service to support mung bean farmers in Patuakhali and Barguna districts of Bangladesh. This initiative began in 2023 and is being implemented in three phases—Phase I in 2023, Phase II in 2024, and the ongoing
Phase III in 2025. IVR (Interactive voice response) system service for Mung bean farmers on the central coast of Bangladesh and Promotion of IVR on rain forecast in the mung bean area (Patukahali and Barguna). The IVR system is an automated phone system feature that interacts with callers and gathers information via a menu choice. The IVR service operates annually from 7th March to 15th June, a critical period for mung bean cultivation. Through this system, farmers receive timely five-day advance rainfall forecasts directly on their mobile phones. This early warning allows them to make informed decisions and take preventive measures to protect their crops from weather-related damage.

By bridging the gap between climate information and on-farm decision-making, the IVR initiative is empowering farmers with actionable insights, enhancing resilience, and contributing to increased productivity and crop protection in vulnerable coastal regions.
