Macher Gari was a digital platform developed to revolutionize the local transportation system for live and frozen fish, both within and across districts. Designed similarly to popular ride-sharing apps like Uber, Macher Gari connected fish transporters and buyers through an easy-to-use mobile application, ensuring efficient, reliable, and timely movement of fish.
This innovative project was funded by the Feed the Future Bangladesh Aquaculture Activity of USAID and implemented by WorldFish. The project was launched in June 2021 and successfully completed its operations in May 2022, following a one-year implementation period. Macher Gari played a crucial role in strengthening the fish value chain by addressing critical transportation challenges and promoting better market access for fish farmers and traders.
Scope and Objectives of the Project:
1. Developed a wide network of all stakeholders.
2. Created a mobile application (online/offline and assisted mechanism) to enable both smart and conventional phone users.
3. Ensured the quality supply of fish fries, fingerlings, etc., and promoted the availability of safe fish in the market.
4. Reduced the use of fish preservatives and adulteration, ensuring safer health outcomes for consumers.
